PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS IN FISHING COMMUNITIES
“I am taking part in the ISA because I believe that proper management of wetlands can provide the instrument to sustain human well-being.”
Chimwemwe Tembo serves as a Biologist and fisheries officer for the Malawian government, focusing on conserving aquatic life within the Lake Chilwa wetland biosphere reserve. He has 8 years of experience in fisheries management as well as aquaculture.
The project aims to tackle the declining fish and aquatic species population in the region, which has resulted in reduced employment opportunities, food insecurity, and malnutrition cases. To address this, the initiative will empower fishermen with skills in sustainable fishing practices, catchment management, entrepreneurship, and aquaculture. At ISA, the focus will be on enhancing expertise in sustainable fishing, catchment management, early warning systems, entrepreneurship, fish processing, and aquaculture.
