Why Native Seeds Matter – And Why We’re Planting Plastic-Free
Why Native Seeds Work Best
Native seeds are naturally adapted to their local environments, making them more resilient to climate change, rising temperatures, pests, and diseases. As a result, they require less water, fertilizer, and maintenance compared to species introduced from other regions. By choosing native seeds, we help restore natural ecosystems, boost biodiversity, and support local pollinators and wildlife.
In Brazil’s Cerrado region, we’ve collected around 90 native seed species for our restoration projects, primarily sourced by rural communities and Indigenous populations. Sharing knowledge about these seeds strengthens community ties, fosters cultural continuity, and promotes responsible stewardship of the land.
Plastic-Free Planting and Nursery Methods
Plastic pollution is a major challenge especially in rural areas where waste treatment systems are limited. To reduce our environmental impact, we’ve been testing biodegradable, plastic-free bags and pots in our nurseries.
So far, we’ve produced around 50 seedlings of two economically important native species: Cajuzinho (Anacardium othonianum) and Baru (Dipteryx alata). These seedlings will be planted in an agroforestry system set for October 2025. The biodegradable materials used dissolve naturally within 6 to 8 months, significantly reducing plastic waste.
By prioritizing plastic-free practices, we aim to set an example for climate-friendly reforestation that supports both environmental sustainability and the well-being of local communities.
